Question Pregnancy Symptoms but Negative Urine Tests?

Has anyone here had this problem? There is a TL;DR explanation at the end, in case you don't want to read through all the specifics.

I was given a loose/casual diagnosis of PCOS at age 19, and started taking birth control pills to prevent me from ovulating, thus preventing the formation of any cysts.

I am now 24, and have been on the same birth control pill (Yaz) this whole time.

However, I stopped taking it for several months over the summer. (There was a reason for it, but it would take awhile to explain, and I don't think it's particularly pertinent to the rest of the story.) I finished my last pack toward the end of June, and had a period directly following, as is normal, into the first couple days of July.

I also had a period at the end of July/beginning of August, apparently all on my own.

Mid-August, I began seeing a guy, who is now my boyfriend, and we were sexually active right from the beginning. I told him I was on birth control~ which technically wasn't true at the time, but I figured I'd be going back on it in 2 weeks or so, so it wouldn't make a difference. So we engaged in only unprotected sex.

I was hoping to get a period at the beginning of September, and planned to start back on the pill after menstruating. Well, I didn't get a period, but thought nothing of it. My periods have always been irregular since I first started getting them, and I never seem to have them more than two consecutive months in a row, so it didn't seem abnormal.

I started taking Yaz again on September 4. Several days after starting, I had some brownish spotting. I figured maybe it was the period I had been expecting, or else it could be spotting from starting the pill. (I spotted when I initially started taking the pill years ago, and I know this is a fairly common side effect.) The bleeding wasn't as heavy as a period. I just wore panty liners for a couple days until it went away.

September went by, and I finished that pack of Yaz on October 2. I took the 4 days of placebo pills. Normally, within those four days, I would start my period, but this time, I didn't bleed at all. "Well that's kind of nice," I shrugged, and I started the next pack on October 6.

Around this time, my bf contracted the flu, and passed it on to me, so we spent about a week being miserable together. But we got over it. Several days later, on October 11, I became nauseous in the late afternoon, and eventually threw up. I attributed it to leftover flu, but bf thought it was weird, because he had not experienced any nausea or vomiting over the course of his bout with the illness. "Well, maybe I ate something that didn't sit right with me," I suggested.

However, a couple days later, the nausea returned. It continued to appear, with increasing frequency and intensity, and I am still getting it on a daily basis now. I kept taking alka seltzers and pepto bismol, but they provided little relief. It has now been 3 weeks that I have been dealing with the nausea, and I have vomited a few times during those weeks. I have no other digestive symptoms - no diarrhea, constipation, stomach cramps, gas, heartburn, whatever. No fever. I am very sensitive to smells~ a lot of food smells make me gag. And all of a sudden, I can't stand many foods that I normally enjoy.

Around the time the nausea started, I started noticing more sudden urges to urinate. I'd be fine, and then two minutes later I would REALLY need the toilet. I seriously peed my pants a couple times when I was outside walking, because I couldn't hold it in until I got home. This is very unusual for me, because I have always been a champ at holding it in. I also have noticed that I've been taking more trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Then about two weeks ago, I was undressing for the shower, and I looked down and noticed my nipples were darker in color. I couldn't think of any reason for this, and decided that my eyes were probably playing tricks on me. But they still definitely look darker to me, and I have since found out that this could be a symptom of pregnancy.

At the beginning of last week, I suddenly gained 1.5 lbs (I weigh myself every morning). I have been trying to lose weight, and have actually lost 10 lbs over the past 2 months. The sudden weight gain felt like it was ALL in my lower abdomen, which felt bloated, and like I was retaining water. This feeling lasted about 4 days, before the bloating went down and I dropped the 1.5 lbs. I am fairly slim (currently 120 lbs), and while my clothes are fitting fine and my stomach is still flat and not "showing," I do feel like I can't suck in as much as I used to be able to.

Last week, I also was pretty moody. I had a bunch of mood swings, felt kind of "down" for a few days, and got mad at my bf over something trivial that normally wouldn't bother me.

The past few weeks, I wouldn't say I've been super fatigued, but I normally work out a lot, and it has seemed like more of a chore lately, causing me to skip a lot of workouts. I also have been sleeping a bit more.

Last weekend, after vomiting, I was trying to calm my stomach, and bf joked, "You're pregnant!" "That's impossible," I laughed. But then awhile later, I remembered that I had been off my birth control, so there could be a slim chance. I took a home pregnancy test a couple days ago~ negative.

I visited my parents for a few days this week, and mentioned my recent stomach troubles to them. My mom said it sounds like I'm pregnant, and dragged me to the women's clinic a few blocks from their house. They administered a urine test~ negative. Still not convinced, my mom told me to get a blood test done, which I am awaiting the results for right now. My mom asked the counselor if any psychiatric meds interfere with birth control or pregnancy tests, since I am bipolar, and have been on several different medications over the past couple years. "Oh, there are very few... I know Topamax is one. It's almost pointless to take birth control if you're on that one," said the counselor. "WHAT?!" we exclaimed. I was on Topamax for a year and a half, and switched psychiatrists several times over this period... THREE different doctors didn't catch this, and reassured me that none of my meds would interfere with my birth control. I went off of Topamax at the end of August, shortly after I began seeing my boyfriend. (I'm currently on Zoloft, Buspar, and Wellbutrin, in addition to the Yaz.)

I had made an appointment with a general physician because of the nausea and vomiting. So later that day, I went to my appointment. They administered a urine pregnancy test~ negative. They took my vitals, and everything was normal, although I did note that my temperature was 97.9, which is a bit higher than my normal temperature when I take it at home (usually I'm more like 96). But I assumed their thermometer is probably more accurate. They tested my blood sugar, and I'm not diabetic. The doctor was puzzled, and suggested that it could be ulcers or gallstones. He ordered some bloodwork and urinalysis, which I got done and am awaiting results for, as well as an abdominal ultrasound, which I'll be going in for next week.

My mother is still convinced that I'm pregnant, and is flabbergasted that all the urine tests have come back negative. I asked if that ever happened to her, and she said, "Well, I experienced all the symptoms that you have when I was pregnant, but my urine tested positive."

I DO NOT want to be pregnant at all, so there is no way that this is a "psychological pregnancy," or "all in my head" from wanting it too badly. My mom and I are estimating that I'd be about 2 months along at this point.

Has anyone else here had negative urine tests, but then turned out to be pregnant??

TL;DR: I have been experiencing nausea and vomiting (but no other gastrointestinal symptoms), more frequent urination, more sudden urges to urinate, darker nipples, mood swings, and possibly some fatigue and elevated body temperature over the past 3 weeks. All signs point to pregnancy, yet three different urine pregnancy tests have come back negative, despite the fact that I would probably be about 2 months along at this point. Is there any explanation for this? Has anyone else here gotten negative urine tests, but then turned out to be pregnant?

You definetly need to get a blood test done - they should be able to get the results back quickly. That is the only sure way to know if you are pregnant. Beyond that, if you are not pregnant you still need to make an appointment with a gynecologist to find out what is going on.

Good luck!

Hi GWU1991! Thanks for your reply. I should be getting the results for my blood test tomorrow morning, so we'll see how that turns out.

I also scheduled my abdominal ultrasound for Monday morning, and an appointment at my gynecologist's office for Tuesday morning.

So hopefully I should be getting some answers really soon!

In the meantime, things have been getting even weirder today. I weighed myself, and I still weigh the exact same~ haven't gained even a pound. But my weight distribution/proportions look quite different today, all of a sudden.

I woke up today, and it's like I started "showing" overnight. My lower abdomen is protruding a bit. Normally, my hip bones stick out, but they are now totally hidden under my small belly.

My boyfriend came over, and I had just gotten out of the shower, so I was wearing only a towel. He was playing with my breasts jokingly, and squeezed a nipple. "Ahh, don't do that, they're sore!" I said, pushing his hand away. "It's really that bad?" he asked. He had been squeezing and sucking on them pretty hard a couple nights earlier while we were having sex, so I said that it was probably still from that. "Yeah, but I do that all the time, and you're usually fine afterwards," he said. Which is true; plus they hadn't started feeling sore until over 24 hours after we had last hooked up. Then he said, "Actually, have your nipples gotten bigger?" "Uh, I don't know... maybe..." I said, examining them. "Yeah, they totally look bigger to me. They're wider or something. Actually, your entire boobs seem bigger," he said. I 'held' them myself and realized that they felt a lot heavier in my hands than they normally do.

So now, even though I weigh the same, I have a bigger abdomen and bigger breasts and nipples, apparently. Add that to the list. =/

This is going to feel like the longest weekend ever, until I can get some answers!
